Move over Hollywood – Joburg has entered the chat. COP & A HALF, a bold new South African action-comedy, is set to stream globally on Amazon Prime Video from 20 August. Produced by Cheeky Studios, the film features a heavyweight local cast, a riotous plot, and marks the studio’s official move into feature filmmaking with a high-budget debut that’s anything but by the book.
Shot across Mzansi with unapologetic energy and full-throttle attitude, COP & A HALF is pure, unfiltered local chaos — a no-holds-barred ride through crime, comedy, and carnage. It stars Jonathan Boynton-Lee and Trevor Gumbi as a mismatched pair thrown together to bring down a brutal drug syndicate, navigating Joburg’s underbelly with guns drawn and patience lost.

From botched busts to back-alley shootouts, the duo’s reluctant alliance takes them from bad decisions to worse one-liners, all while dodging bullets, bending rules, and blowing stuff up. The result? A street-level buddy cop flick with distinctly South African swagger, and no interest in playing it safe.

The creation of Cheeky Studios marks the group’s next chapter: original scripted storytelling for a global audience — a vision brought to life by Executive Producer Yusuf Stevens and Producer, Odette van der Haar.

Writer Meren Reddy worked closely with lead actor Jonathan Boynton Lee, to script the film that pays homage to classic buddy cop pairings while giving the genre a gritty South African twist — packed with sharp dialogue, local energy, and scenes that could only happen in Joburg.
Ahead of its Amazon debut, COP & A HALF will roll out the red carpet at a VIP Johannesburg premiere on 19 August where guests will gather for an exclusive first look at the film — a celebration of homegrown talent and a bold new voice in local filmmaking.
