What began as a bold idea to create a world-class, eco-focused estate on the scenic KZN South Coast has become a resounding success – in just two years. Serenity Hills, a 120-hectare residential estate near Margate, has reached a major milestone, with more than 90% of Phase 1 sold out, over 40 homes built and only a handful of plots available.

“This milestone achievement indicates the growing demand for lifestyle estates that balance modern comforts with sustainable living in a more affordable price bracket,” commented Sam Wenger, Development Director of Serenity Hills. “It also cements Serenity Hills as a benchmark development, not only in the KZN South Coast and in South Africa, but internationally.”

Development from Vision to Reality

When developers Sam Wenger and Reece Daniel first unveiled Serenity Hills, their ambition was clear: to set a new standard for coastal living that prioritised sustainable development and the vibrant community life synonymous with the KZN South Coast. Two years later, their vision has been realised.

In just 12 months, Phase 1 was completed – a feat that involved more than 320 working days, 350 000 hours of labour, and the hand laying of 600 000 paver bricks. Currently, infrastructure is fully operational, including a water reservoir, 3km of internal roads, 24/7 security, and fast fibre internet. Some 40 homes have been built, with more than 80 residents already enjoying the vibrant community life of Serenity Hills.

“Our dream was to create a sanctuary where people could enjoy the modern conveniences while living in harmony with the natural assets that make this region so unique,” says developer Reece Daniel. “Seeing families move in, trails being walked, and the clubhouse buzzing with activity shows that Serenity Hills is a dream now realised.”

Centred on Eco-Living

One of the standout features of Serenity Hills is the developers’ commitment to conservation. Of the estate’s 120 hectares, 70 hectares are reserved for private conservation space. Already, more than 1 260 indigenous plants have been restored while expanding the estate’s green cover by 60% in two years. Wildlife is also thriving with the reintroduction of more than 60 buck, Cape porcupines, and more.

To ensure residents are immersed in this natural space, there are more than 10km of walking trails winding through forest and grassland, offering views across the Indian Ocean. Homes are solar-ready, off-grid capable, and pet-friendly, reflecting the estate’s eco-conscious ethos and support of family living.

A Thriving Community

The homes at Serenity Hills have all been designed to leverage the natural assets, and ensure privacy for all the residents. A partnership with luxury furniture brand, Weylandts, ensures residents receive exclusive benefits when furnishing their homes.

Community connection remains at the heart of this development, and the Serenity Hills Clubhouse has become a hub for resident meet-ups, while its Peaceful Escapes Spa & Beauty Salon offers curated wellness experiences for residents and guests.

The estate’s culinary excellence is anchored by The Packshed Restaurant, an award-winning eatery and local favourite. Found here is the Sweet Gang & Friends Farm Stall that sells handmade, locally sourced produce and products. The popular Sweetdale Night Market has also become a staple of the community, creating a relaxed, family- and pet-friendly atmosphere.

This careful blending of lifestyle, wellness, and sustainability has attracted buyers from across the globe. Homeowners hail not only from South Africa but also from Switzerland, Germany, the UK, and the US, drawn by the estate’s unique combination of coastal living and international-standard development.

A Catalyst for Growth

The rapid success of Phase 1 has proven Serenity Hills’ low-density model – with 574 units planned across three neighbourhoods – remains in demand. Currently, only 10 stands remain in Phase 1 of the development, alongside 2 luxurious Forest Pods built to harmonise with the natural slope of the land.

The estate has also made a significant economic contribution, with more than 450 jobs created during construction, prioritising local employment. The focus on community upliftment and inclusion is also evidenced by its impactful Skills Center, which upskills local entrepreneurs; as well as its Sweetbike Community Project, which refurbishes bicycles from international donors for local schoolchildren to travel to school.

Ayanda Masengemi, Associate Director at Serenity Hills, is instrumental in driving community inclusion by overseeing these integral projects and creating a dynamic community connection. His efforts have ensured fairness, equality and meaningful involvement for everyone — both within the project team and in the surrounding community.

This dedication to inclusivity and investment has led the estate to gain recognition at the highest levels – including an acknowledgement from President Cyril Ramaphosa at the South African Investment Conference for its contribution to local investment. Locally, Serenity Hills was recently nominated for ‘Best Estate on the South Coast’ in the 2025 Best of South Coast Awards, a recognition of both its market appeal and ecological leadership.

“Serenity Hills has effectively become a prototype for future coastal estates,” continues Daniel. “The response from buyers, both local and international, shows the appetite for sustainable, community-focused developments. What we’ve achieved here sets a new benchmark, and we’re excited to see it continue to grow.”

Looking Ahead

As Phase 1 nears full capacity, Serenity Hills is preparing for the next chapter. Phase 2 will expand on the success of the initial launch, offering buyers new opportunities to be part of this pioneering estate. With its blend of lifestyle, conservation, and investment value, Serenity Hills is positioned as one of the fastest-selling estates in KwaZulu-Natal and a leading destination for semigration buyers and international investors alike.
