Seven legends of the beautiful game were honoured at the South African Hall of Fame’s second Soccer Legends Induction, hosted at Silverstar Casino on 14 November 2025. The prestigious event paid tribute to some of South Africa’s greatest football heroes.

Honouring their enduring legacy, the South African Hall of Fame posthumously inducted two iconic figures:

  • Phil Masinga – Revered striker and international ambassador of South African football, remembered for his historic goal that sent Bafana Bafana to their first-ever FIFA World Cup in 1998. Represented by his children Tinyiko & Sifiso Masinga.
  • Clive Barker – Legendary coach and tactician who led South Africa to its 1996 African Cup of Nations victory, uniting a nation through the beautiful game. Represented by his son John Barker.

Living legends honoured on the night and present at the ceremony included:

  • Aaron Mokoena – The youngest player ever to play for Bafana Bafana making his debut at just 18 years old in 1999. He later also became one of the youngest captains of the national team.
  • Janine van Wyk – South Africa’s most-capped footballer and pioneer in women’s sport.
  • Mark Fish – Defender and member of the victorious 1996 AFCON squad.
  • Mark Williams – Celebrated striker who scored twice in the 1996 AFCON final.
  • Doctor Khumalo – Midfield maestro and symbol of excellence in the early Bafana Bafana era. Represented by his business manager Jazzman Mahlakgane and members of the Khumalo family.

Seeing these legends receive the recognition they deserve was a moving experience for everyone in attendance. The atmosphere was filled with emotion, pride, and heartfelt reflection, as family members and inductees shared what the moment meant to them.

John Barker, son of the late Clive Barker, spoke with pride about his father’s passion for the game and its power to unite:

“My father loved football and especially what football represented during the apartheid era. Sport, and in particular football, has the ability to break down barriers. The team, on and off the field, represented the possibility of what South Africa could and has become. A nation of people from all walks of life, working together for a common goal.”

Tinyiko and Sifiso Masinga, children of the late Phil Masinga, shared a deeply emotional tribute to their father’s legacy:

“This moment means more to us as a family than we can ever put in words. Our dad was ‘n young man from Khuma, who rose to live his family’s wildest dreams. Yet he carried himself with such humility, grace and deep love for people. He worked hard, he gave generously and he made sure that no one around him ever lacked. If he succeeded, everyone he loved succeeded with him as well. That was his heart. That was our dad.”

Aaron Mokoena, reflecting on his journey from humble beginnings to international recognition, offered inspiration to future generations:

“I have travelled the world because of the sport that I like. I always said, I wanted to break records. I wanted to be the best. From the humble beginning. And it happened. I always say to the kids that I coach, it’s how much you want it.”

Janine van Wyk, South Africa’s most-capped footballer, delivered a powerful and personal message about the path she has walked, and the progress of women in sport:

“Standing here tonight is probably one of the most humbling moments of my life. When I look back on my journey in early days of simply playing the sport that I love so much, I never imagined how it would lead me here. Being recognised among some of South Africa’s greatest athletes. Football has truly given me everything. It’s given me a purpose, it’s given me joy, and it’s given me a sense of belonging. But it’s also come with many sacrifices as a woman. For so many women in sport, recognition has never come easily. We’ve had to fight for opportunities, for respect and for the right to be seen. Yet, it’s those challenges that make moments like this so meaningful. This honour isn’t just mine. It belongs to every female footballer who has ever given her all to keep our game moving forward and into the right direction.”

These reflections are a powerful reminder of why the South African Hall of Fame exists, not only to celebrate greatness, but to honour the stories behind it, and ensure they continue to inspire for generations to come.

“The stories of these icons are more than just sporting triumphs. They are symbols of perseverance, unity, and national pride,” said Johnny Burger, Chairman of the South African Hall of Fame.
