From Jazz legends to immersive performance: Die Pienk Kerk’s July line-up brings World-Class talent to Melville

After months of sold-out performances and packed houses, Die Pienk Kerk continues its remarkable rise as one of Johannesburg’s most distinctive cultural destinations, unveiling a July programme that spans jazz, cabaret, musical theatre and boundary-pushing performance art.

Housed in Melville’s iconic pink church at 24 Chatou Road, Die Pienk Kerk has quickly established itself as far more than a restaurant. Originally built in 1903 and lovingly reimagined by owner Yanni Briel, the venue has become a welcoming gathering place where food, music, theatre and community come together in unforgettable ways.

Here, audiences come not just to watch a performance, but to experience it. Candlelit tables, exceptional artists, delicious food and an intimate setting combine to create evenings that linger long after the final note has been played.

This July, Die Pienk Kerk presents four extraordinary productions.

WAT OM TE DOEN AS DIE WÊRELD BRAND

Saturday, 4 July at 7pm

The month opens with Wat om te doen as die wêreld brand, featuring celebrated actress and singer Elzabé Zietsman and award-winning musician Jody Jason Petersen.

Written and directed by acclaimed poet and playwright Bibi Slippers, this witty and thought-provoking cabaret imagines a world where the universe’s cosmic advice line has gone offline. Blending humour, music and emotional insight, it offers audiences a fresh and uplifting perspective on navigating uncertain times.

MCCOY MRUBATA & GARY WITTNER QUARTET

Saturday, 11 July at 7pm

South African jazz icon McCoy Mrubata reunites with acclaimed American guitarist, composer and educator Gary Wittner for a special one-night-only performance.

Their collaboration began at the National Arts Festival in Makhanda in 2006 and has since taken them to stages across South Africa and the United States, including San Francisco’s renowned SFJAZZ venue.

For their Die Pienk Kerk performance, they will be joined by bassist Jimmy Mngwandi and drummer Bernice Boikanyo, promising an evening of world-class improvisation, musical conversation and exceptional jazz.

DE WALS VAN DIE LIEFDE

Saturday, 18 July at 7pm

Acclaimed singer-songwriter Jannie du Toit brings De Wals van die Liefde to Die Pienk Kerk, accompanied by Marcel Dednam on piano and Deryn Dednam on alto saxophone.

Fresh from a successful run at KKNK, the production celebrates the Dutch songs and artists that have influenced Du Toit’s remarkable career. Featuring music by Jules de Corte, Robert Long, Herman van Veen and Jacques Brel, the show has been described by Die Burger as “a truly magical show for anyone who loves music”.

THE HA!MAN SHOW – CAN A CELLO CHANGE THE WORLD?

Friday, 24 July at 7pm

Internationally acclaimed musician and composer François le Roux, better known as HA!Man, concludes the month with an immersive performance unlike anything audiences have experienced before.

A virtuoso cellist, pianist and improviser, HA!Man has spent more than three decades captivating audiences across the globe with performances that blend cello, voice, keyboard, movement and original electronic soundscapes into a multi-sensory journey. Drawing on classical traditions, African influences and fearless improvisation, no two HA!Man performances are ever the same.

And the excitement continues beyond July. Die Pienk Kerk’s August programme is already taking shape, with audiences able to look forward to a special staging of Under Milkwood on 15 and 16 August, the hilarious comedian Chris Forrest on 22 August, the ever-popular Hannon PJ Party on 28 August, and a lively performance by the Kalahari Band on 30 August.

Further details on the August line-up will be announced soon, but if recent months are anything to go by, audiences are encouraged to book early to avoid disappointment.

Tickets are available via Quicket and include a meal with is served 90 minutes prior to the performance. Guests are welcome to bring their own wine.
